"100 Questions for Webmasters" by Mouseling.

Published: OCT 30 25

1. Please introduce yourself.
I'm lapin, a hobby artist and an amateur in every hobby I enjoy. I work in a corporate office during the day, and at night I spend most of my time in my home "office."
2. How long have you been making websites?
Years at this point.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
As a kid, surfing websites dedicated to people's art and webcomics. I remember a specific website, named Chiaroscuro, that featured King of Fighters BL fanart, that really inspired me LOL. As an adult, I became aware of Neocities through an artist friend.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
I love websites where I can appreciate art, OCs, and writing! The writings vary from: daily blogs, art blogs, girly/fashion blogs, and reviews/analysis of anime, video games, and novels. I really like to be nosey, basically.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I go with the flow! Sometimes when I have concrete ideas of what I want to design or implement, they never come to fruition. I mostly design and plan things on a whim, it seems to work better for me that way.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
Too many to list! But definitely all the of the friends and acqaintances I've made on the "small web." Outside of this list, the websites of different EGL brands. Also the collection designs of Flowerknows Cosmetics.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
Designing pages! Putting together the backgrounds, assets, etc. It's like I get to be creative and draw without actually having to draw! (I am often too lazy to draw...
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
Writing interesting reviews or blogs, even! I have a hard time wording things, and I often struggle with how much I want to put out there.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
Different ones. I have fun making new layouts.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Pretty confident! Though I know I can streamline and condense some things but I code how I code. *shrug*
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
Yes, because I just Googled it lol. Will I use it, though? Probably not.
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
< li > I like lists.
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Decide what background or set of assets I want to use or design, and then I work from there.
14. Do you know JavaScript?
Just enough to fake it.
15. How about PHP?
NO! I'm trying though. T_T
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Cutely elegant, I guess? Lots of pink, definitely. Content-wise, it's just stuff I like or find interesting.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
At this point, design I guess. I'd love to have more content but so many of my pages are WIPs.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
Yes, I own two! I'm not counting the 3rd one because I'm going to let it expire.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
They are okay but I find most of them lack in content so I find them kind of boring.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I don't think so, but I also don't check it.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
They are cute! And can be fun! It's a neat way seeing how someone can condense their website, design philosophy, and aesthetic tastes in a little button.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
My eyes glaze over if the wall is too big and I'll click off of the page. I need to work on mine...
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
Technically, this site is a "startover" and I did what I wanted to do differently - create and use my own assets. I'd say 90% of /home is my own stuff. The rest of my site still uses random stuff though. Either way, Valentinely is very similar to my last site because I like what I like.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Not really.
25. What text editor do you use?
I code in notepad, usually. Somes Codepen. I really should use something else...
26. Why do you use that one?
Easy and I can do it from my work laptop, teehee.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
On my own server! There are some imgur links sprinkled here and there, I've been meaning to fix that but I just haven't made the time.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I don't care.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
Around 120 MB but I know It's that low because of the previously mentioned Imgur links. x_x I really gotta fix that.
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
I try to.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
Depends on what I'm on a site for! For reading, the more simple the better. But I also really, really like poking around well-decorated sites.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
Yes! I use my favorite colors when I design pages for me. When I design OC pages, I use colors that relate to the character.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
Yes because people can be parasocial, rude, or annoying. Also being "big" on Neocities eventually made me uncomfortable because the attention and gossip associated with the host/users in Discord servers and other various places. (I promise you I am not that interesting, just a normal lady.) But since moving away from NC and onto my own island, my interest in maintaining a website has renewed.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I have some friends into hobby webdev! Though I'm really bad at keeping in touch or being social so I don't know if they would consider me a friend. LOL
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
My sister and my husband.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
Major updates, not often at all. But I try to tweak or add small things here and there at least weekly. I have not really found a set routine as things are just now settling down for me IRL.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I think I change certain pages often. I'm currently trying to update old layouts that I'm using from my Lovesick domain.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Me & hobby-focused definitely! I used to have pages that documented IRL events, live shows, and stuff like that but it was definitely too revealing.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
No. I would hate it.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
Never! Turning a hobby into work never works out favorably for me. I used to do a lot of art commissions and I grew to hate drawing over time so I don't do it anymore. My work is the least creative thing (I deal with lots of numbers and law) so it's a good contrast to my hobbies.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
Not as much anymore. I don't tend to set aside the time for it.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
I have a fandom twitter that I haven't touched in ages. I do have a Tiktok account but I don't post much if at all, I use it to watch dumb videos lol. I also use Reddit for r/skincare and for my fix of r/relationships drama.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I don't use messengers anymore. They have been uninstalled from my phone! I don't enjoy communication on demand.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Yes! It depends on my mood but my taste is pretty varied.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I have my cliques on my other domain. I'll probably move them over to Valentinely though.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
Different things but I wouldn't say there are many topics.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
I present my real interests and hobbies, and my real thoughts regarding reviews or blogs or whatever but I think it's hard to really show your "real" self online. In any case, I definitely do not construct a "persona" - too much effort to larp. I do try not to have public melties in my diary though, I tend to get embarrassed about it later.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Hmmm...I guess not through my site specifically. I have made friends other ways on the internet though!
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
Sure!
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
Auto-play music. Other than that, do whatchu want girl.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
Blog more!!!! Please I want to read more, no matter how mundane.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
Meh, I don't use a lot of semantic HTML I think, but I don't really care.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
No. If something is ugly on Firefox....oh well!
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
I use Edge or Chrome mostly. I use them because...it's easy? IDK, I don't put much thought into stuff like that.
55. And what OS are you on?
Windows 10 at home, 11 at work.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
No opinion.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
Nope. I know a lot of people argue to have a mobile friendly site, but I only websurf on the PC so I don't really care about it. I've mentioned it before but it's not to be contrarian, I'm just lazy.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
HATE.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
They are neat. I don't ever surf using the widgets, though. I'm in the OC webring and currently waiting on acceptance from another.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
Yes! I have a Nanami one and I'm trying to redo my Tifa shrine. I like to see people's love and passion in their shrines to their fave characters or other media interests. I find it really boring if the webmaster doesn't write about their thoughts and feelings. I dislike shrines that only copy & paste info from Wikis.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
Probably? They've been referred to as "pink sites" which I know carries negative connotations amongst the Neocities crowd but I don't really care.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
My ideal website is one that is purely self indulgent and 100% made with original assets, and love! I'm striving for that but there are just some assets that are too good not to use.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
A hobby artist! I try to draw my own assets and pixels, or at least use pre-existing ones that aren't widely used in the personal web sphere.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
I don't have any. I mostly use the stuff on my harddrive that I saved over the years. I used to have them up on Lovesick but I took them down.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Using 'px' over 'em' or '%'. I just can't let pixels go.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Take your time! Don't just copy & paste a layout and try to tweak it from there, you won't learn anything. But most of all, stay true to your heart's desires and do what you want design-wise with your space! Don't let people bully you into not using gifs, loud/soft colors, or etc. It's your web kingdom, afterall!
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
Mostly CSS.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
They're neat!
69. How about table-based layouts?
Nostalgic! And can be cute. But too much work, imo.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
I constantly use column layouts.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
CSS definitely, I can be nitpicky about how stuff looks.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
Yes but usually just for pages that will be viewed by my eyes only.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I've definitely done it before, when I want to use cute pixels but I generally only make them when I need to.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
I'd say I'm of average skill in the hobbyist webdev space. I only care to learn about how to make things pretty.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Not really anymore. The only time I look nowadays if there's a really cool JS effect or something.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
Lissaexplains, and through trial and error.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
Absolutely.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
Nice!
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
Px all the way. I'll use % here and there though.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
Old English MT, Unifraktur Maguntia, Adorble Lady, & MS Gothic.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
I'd run one with my sister, because that's the only way I see it as being fun.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
Yes as often as I can!
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
Yes I have a favorites folder specifically for sites I enjoy. I'd be happy about getting bookmarked!
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
My art! I'm not particularly skilled IMO but drawing gives me joy and it makes me happy when I receive compliments on my art.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
Not really, the only techy thing I collect are PS2 games, cute controllers/headsets.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
Every day! Anywhere from 1 hour to the entire day, to be honest.
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
ME!!!! And other normie nerdy women like me. I love to see the websites of other grown women lol so if I can help influence anyone to make a site, please do...
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
No.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
No.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I've used Carrd in the past. I think SSGs are fine if that's the route you want to go but they feel less charming.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
Yes! In fact, I use the one from Lovesick LOL. Out of sentimentality, I couldn't bare to start a fresh new counter...Not that those numbers really mean anything anyways, but I guess it's the one thing social media really drilled into my brain. x_x I might remove it in the future, actually.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
lifestream.net for ffvii garbo, myfigurecollection when I'm extremely bored, and I lurk a few other ones for specfic interests (makeup, webdev, etc.)
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
Most of the time I use notepad.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
I've been told a few times that I'm cool, mostly by other nerdy women which is fine with me. But do I think I'm cool? Absolutely not lol, I know I'm a dork, just a dork with disposable income that spends it on stupid weeb stuff instead of investing it like I probably should.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
I did delete some old pages because I got embarrassed (and my feelings got hurt tbh LMAO I'm sensitive ;-;)
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I'd probably leave Valentinely up. I deleted stuff and excluded my last website from the Internet Archive because my opsec was bad. I was waaay too open about certain shows and events I attended which made it very easy find me if someone wanted to. Oops.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I used to be very open about the places I've been and what things I would be doing, which as stated above, made it super easy to google locations. I used to write about deeply personal feelings and thoughts but I've decided to keep more of that stuff to myself.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
I don't have one!
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
No, but I should. My art gallery especially.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
Fine! It was fun!
